Position Overview

An established engineering organization is seeking a full-time Structural Engineer to provide structural engineering services for industrial projects. Project experience may include Oil & Gas facilities, factories, power plants, substations, and other complex industrial infrastructure.
The Structural Engineer will support engineering and design efforts by developing studies, structural drawings, calculations, specifications, evaluations, and technical solutions in accordance with applicable procedures, codes, standards, and contract requirements. The successful candidate will work closely with structural engineers, designers, drafters, and other technical disciplines in an integrated team environment.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, creative, analytical, and capable of solving complex structural engineering problems while maintaining a high standard of quality and meeting project schedule requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide conceptual design of structural supports for industrial facilities and infrastructure.
• Prepare structural calculations and engineering analyses in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
• Perform structural loading calculations in accordance with ASCE 7, IBC, and other applicable regulations.
• Perform static, dynamic, and structural analyses.
• Design structural steel systems and connections.
• Design foundations and retaining walls.
• Perform reinforced and structural concrete design.
• Develop structural design sketches for designers and drafters using AutoCAD.
• Participate in facility walkdowns and site visits to evaluate existing conditions.
• Review existing conditions and as-built drawings and collect, document, and record field data.
• Review customer and vendor information received from subcontractors and integrate relevant information into design solutions.
• Perform structural observations and field evaluations.
• Execute project schedule requirements while maintaining a high degree of quality in engineering deliverables.
• Coordinate closely with other technical disciplines in planning and executing projects as an integrated team.
• Travel up to 25% to customer and project locations to coordinate designs, collect field data, and support project execution.

Preferred Transmission Line & Substation Experience

• Experience with overhead transmission line design in accordance with ASCE 10, ASCE 48, and ASCE 74.
• Experience with substation structure design in accordance with ASCE 113, IEEE 693, and IEEE 605.
• Provide structural engineering support for overhead transmission line structures, including structure attachments, load path development, and foundation reactions.
• Develop and check design criteria and load combinations for transmission structures consistent with ASCE 113 and applicable utility standards.
• Coordinate with line design teams to interpret wind, ice, ruling span, angle, broken wire, and construction loading inputs and outputs.
• Translate transmission line loading requirements into structural and foundation design requirements.
• Review vendor drawings and submittals for poles, lattice towers, crossarms, and line hardware for compliance with project requirements.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Minimum 8 years of relevant professional structural engineering experience.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
• California PE license preferred.
• Structural Engineer (SE) license preferred.
• Demonstrated experience with structural steel design.
• Demonstrated experience with concrete design.
• Experience performing dynamic analysis, including Response Spectrum, Time History, and Transient analysis.
• Industrial project experience is required.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to break down technical concepts and communicate engineering fundamentals to staff and team members.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal guidance.
• Previous related internship experience is a plus but not required.

Project & Team Collaboration

The Structural Engineer will collaborate with structural engineers, designers, drafters, project teams, vendors, subcontractors, customers, and other engineering disciplines. The position requires the ability to integrate information from multiple sources, coordinate design requirements, and deliver high-quality engineering solutions within established schedules and project requirements.

Travel Requirements

Travel of up to 25% may be required to customer and project locations. Travel may include facility walkdowns, site visits, structural observations, field data collection, design coordination, and project support activities.

Physical Requirements & Site Conditions

• Must be able to perform site visits to prepare sketches and as-built drawings.
• Must be able to climb ladders and stair platforms at industrial and project facilities.
• Must be able to lift or exert up to 10 pounds.
• Requires good depth perception.
• Requires the ability to judge distances and spatial relationships.
• Must be comfortable working in field and industrial environments as required for project assignments.

Compensation

Competitive base salary of $120,000 – $140,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, professional licensure, technical expertise, and overall fit for the position.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is an experienced Structural Engineer with at least 8 years of relevant experience and a strong background in industrial structural engineering. Candidates with Oil & Gas, refinery, renewable energy, power generation, substation, or other heavy industrial project experience are especially well suited for this opportunity.
The successful candidate will combine strong structural steel and concrete design capabilities with experience in static and dynamic analysis, field evaluations, engineering calculations, and multidisciplinary project coordination. A required PE license, preferably in California, is essential for success in this role.
