Position Overview

A rooted and stable heavy equipment manufacturer is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its established engineering team in Bucyrus, Ohio. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced design engineers and report directly to the Engineering Manager, who will provide technical guidance and mentorship.

Required Industry Experience

Candidates must have professional experience working in heavy equipment manufacturing or at an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM). Experience with capital equipment, equipment design, fabrication, machining, welding, or similar industrial manufacturing environments is highly relevant.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete mechanical and electrical design of equipment, with the majority of time focused on engineering design work.
  • Modify existing equipment designs based on customer requests and project requirements.
  • Ensure mechanical and electrical design documentation is accurate and complies with applicable UL and NEC standards.
  • Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for design projects.
  • Manage multiple design projects simultaneously across various stages of development.
  • Support the sales and quoting process with technical design expertise.
  • Complete and document Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).
  • Provide engineering support to production teams and vendors related to design, manufacturability, and production requirements.
  • Participate in weekly design status meetings and communicate project progress.
  • Support mechanical troubleshooting activities as needed.
  • Utilize AutoCAD and 3D modeling software to develop and modify equipment designs.
  • Perform other engineering and design-related duties as directed by management.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma required; Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Depending on education and background, approximately 4–8 years of experience in a similar Mechanical Design Engineer role.
  • Required experience in a heavy equipment manufacturing environment or at an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
  • Mechanical design experience, including structural equipment, conveyors, and related capital equipment.
  • Experience with 3D modeling software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to design accuracy.
  • Ability to spend up to 90% of the workday at a desk while being comfortable visiting the production floor as needed.
  • Candidates must be local to the Bucyrus, Ohio area; relocation assistance is not available.

Preferred Skills

  • Electrical design experience, including control panels and electrical routing.
  • Experience with Vault software.
  • ERP system experience.
  • Experience working in a job shop manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, Solid Edge, CATIA, Unigraphics, Inventor, or similar CAD platforms.
  • Experience with tooling and tooling design.
  • Product and equipment design experience.
  • Knowledge of design standards, design problem-solving, and cost-down initiatives.
