Position Overview
A well-established, premier global manufacturer is seeking a Controls Design Engineer to join its Electrical Design Engineering team in Tiffin, Ohio. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced engineers and contribute to the design, programming, and modification of capital equipment and machine systems.
This role will spend approximately 40% of the time on PLC programming and 20% on electrical design, with the remaining time supporting engineering projects, machine design concepts, customer requirements, documentation, and cross-functional collaboration. The position reports to the Electrical Design Engineering Manager and offers structured training with a Senior Controls Design Engineer.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with a Senior Engineer to learn company products, equipment, engineering processes, and design standards.
- Program programmable logic controllers (PLCs), primarily using Allen-Bradley PLC platforms.
- Manage multiple engineering projects and collaborate with mechanical engineers to develop complete machine design concepts.
- Design control panels and electrical hardware systems.
- After completing training, independently manage approximately 1–6 design projects simultaneously.
- Make engineering and design changes to existing equipment designs.
- Create and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for engineering and design projects.
- Develop customized modifications to established equipment and machine designs.
- Assist Sales and Customer Service teams by providing technical electrical expertise related to customer requirements and quotations.
- Communicate directly with customers regarding equipment needs, preferences, and technical requirements.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams to complete projects successfully.
- Perform other engineering and project-related duties as assigned by management.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Electro-Mechanical Technology, or a related field.
- Bachelor’s degree is highly preferred.
- At least 3 years of experience performing similar controls, electrical design, or automation functions, depending on education and background.
- Experience with PLC programming.
- Experience with electrical design, including control panels and panel layouts.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work approximately 90% of the time in a desk-based engineering environment.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as a contributor within a team-oriented environment.
Preferred Skills
- Allen-Bradley PLC programming and controls experience.
- VFD and variable-frequency drive control design.
- Servo control design and motion control experience.
- Strong project management skills.
- Experience with RSLogix.
- Experience with HMI (Human Machine Interface) systems.
- Familiarity with Siemens, Mitsubishi, or other PLC platforms.
- Experience with industrial automation and capital equipment.
- Experience collaborating with mechanical engineering teams.
- Knowledge of industrial, manufacturing, or electrical engineering technologies.
Training & Development
The successful candidate will receive structured training and work closely with a Senior Controls Design Engineer to learn the company’s products, processes, equipment, and engineering standards. Work Environment & Schedule
- Position is required to be onsite Monday through Friday.
- Approximately 90% of the role is desk-based engineering and design work.
- Candidates should be comfortable working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Preferred candidates are local to the Tiffin, Ohio area.
- Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
